I wanted to create a modular focal point for the entire living space that had the potential to ‘grow’ and expand as the owners’ needs and tastes evolve. The corner of the room is dead because it is located between the TV and the access to the gentleman’s study. To compensate for that, I made provision for a large planter box so that a small tree may be placed in it and enliven the corner. The rest of the bookcase is conceived as a modular wall unit. Traditionally, in wall units, the space below eye level stores the heavy or unsightly items behind doors. The eye level space is used for TV storage and photographs. The space above stores the remaining items.
I opted to place seating in the place of the below and eye level storage. When the backrest and seat are lifted, users can access storage for heavy or unsightly items; when the seating is in use, conversations can take place with all participants placed at eye level and with a view of the TV (which is not the focus of the room). The space above eye level is for shelves that slot between the fixed vertical members. The height of the shelves is adjustable. The shelving can be used to store books, artwork or objects. The cats can mount the apparatus and use it as a play space.
